This vase was fired using the naked raku method.  Firstly, the vase burnished to a smooth surface when leatherhard.  Next, it's bisque fired.  Masking tape was then applied in strips around the vase to create a barrier of the next two steps.  It was then dipped in a mixture of clay and flint to coat it and then dipped in glaze (watery glass powder basically).  The tape was then removed.

It is then ready for the kiln.  Once it reaches a certain temperature, it's removed from the kiln and placed in a metal box with sawdust and covered, keeping it away from oxygen.

Where the tape was (and the neck of the vase), the smoke from the sawdust was able to burn a beautiful light grey into the clay.  The clay/glaze mixture falls away (with a lot of scrubbing), leaving behind a beautiful white speckly appearance.

Since raku vessels don't reach vitrification temperatures, they are not water-tight.  This vase, however, was treated with a sealant and should now be watertight.

Measures approx 18cm tall.

Handcrafted in Cornwall with fun.
